Domain disputes increase by 6.6% in 2004

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has just released the number stats for domain trademark disputes and the findings reveal a 6.6% cybersquatting litigation increase from the previous year.
A total of 1,179 cases of alledged trademark infringements involving domain names were brought before the WIPO in 2004, up 79 cases from 2003.

Barbie Girl Forced To Give Domain To Mattel

A real life "Barbie" is backing down from a costly legal fight with toy giant Mattel over the domain name Barbiesshop.com.
Bondage clothing designer Barbie Anderson-Whalley says she's been using the web address for her online gothic related clothing site for over four years, named after her "brick and morter" business in Calgary, Alberta. Canada. But Mattel notified the leather bound proprieter in July that the her businesses name was diluting the companys "Barbie" doll trademark.
After some legal entanglements and hefty lawyer bills totalling over 8 thousand dollars, the clothing designer has decided to relinquish the domain. On the flipside, she reached an agreement with Mattel to keep her clothing store name intact.
